Kornhaus

The Kornhaus is a former grain warehouse in Baden , Switzerland . The listed building is located on the eastern edge of the old town on the banks of the Limmat , in the immediate vicinity of the wooden bridge and diagonally across from the governor's palace .

The oldest verifiable granary in Baden had stood on Kirchplatz since at least 1369. Further grain stores in the Middle Ages were the department store on the market square and the screed of the town hall . In 1511 the Agnesspital had the sparsely windowed building erected on Kronengasse, which is known today as the Kornhaus. It was initially for personal use, but was also used as a general grain store for the citizens from the 16th or 17th century. For centuries it was called "Spitalhaus" or "Spitalmagazin".

During the time of the Helvetic Republic , the granary was a barracks , from 1843 to 1851 there was a work place on the top floor for the prisoners of the then neighboring penal institution, which burned a little later. In 1954 a theater was opened in the basement (“Theater im Kornhaus”), and from 1962 to 1965 it was expanded into a youth center . In addition, the offices of the municipal youth work, the culture department, a crèche, an atelier and the psychiatric service of the canton of Aargau are located there.
