The Kornhaus is on the northwest corner of Freiburg Cathedral Square . Today there is a café and shops in the building.

history

In place of the granary there was previously the guild house of the shopkeepers, called zum Falkenstein. In addition, the city gave its public dances and festivals there, most recently in the presence of Philip the Fair. The old guild and dance house was originally built together with the "zur Lidechse" house on the one hand, and the "zum Hölle" house on the other. The alleys on both sides of the Kornhaus, which now connect Münsterplatz with Engelstrasse, did not exist at the time.

For the Reichstag convened by the Roman-German King and later Emperor Maximilian I in 1498 , larger rooms were required for the meetings and the king's entourage. That is why the Kornhaus was rebuilt as a dance and festival hall. But since the building was apparently not ready, the meetings took place in the court arbor behind the old town hall . The Kornhaus was built as a detached house on the former guild house of the shopkeepers in Falkenstein and two adjoining buildings. After completion, the granary was used by the citizens and the guilds. In addition, the Kornmarkt was held here, which until then had taken place in front of a shed on Münsterplatz. The Kornhaus was popularly known as the new Hell : From 1547, there was also a slaughterhouse in the Kornhaus for a long time, this Metzig was also the common sales room for the city's butchers, which at that time also led to the name Großer Metzig . On August 16, 1757, the Freiburg Women's War began here .

From 1770 to 1824 the theater and comedy house was here , from 1789 it was also listed in the fire register as a comedy and grain house . When the former Augustinian Hermit Church was used as a city theater from 1823 , it was used to store grain for the grain trade. This then led to its current name. In 1884 it was rebuilt, and at the suggestion of citizens and associations, the upper floors were once again converted into a ballroom with a capacity of 550 people. access was via two granite stairs on either side of the main entrance. It was destroyed to the ground in the bombing raids in November 1944. The reconstruction in the historical form then took place in 1970, whereby the interior was adapted to the new requirements. The renovation after a roof fire in 2000 restored the external shape in the historical style.
