Disocactus phyllanthoides is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet phyllanthoides means '(Latin) similar to phyllanthus'.

description

Disocactus phyllanthoides grows richly branched and becomes up to 1 meter long. The main shoots are shaped like a stalk at the base, flattened in the upper part. The side shoots are light green, often tinged with red. They have protruding central ribs and lateral nerves and are lanceolate, twisting, flattened and bluntly pointed. They become 15 to 30 inches long and 2.5 to 4 inches wide. The areoles are not thorned. The bell-shaped to funnel-shaped pink flowers reach a size of 8 to 10 centimeters in length and 7 to 9 centimeters in diameter. The 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter and somewhat ribbed fruits are initially green and later red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Disocactus phyllanthoides is widespread in the Mexican states of Puebla and Veracruz and occurs at altitudes between 1500 and 1850 meters.

The first description as Cactus phyllanthoides was in 1813 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Wilhelm Barthlott introduced the species to Disocactus in 1991 .

The following species and varieties are synonyms : Cactus phyllanthoides DC. (1813), Epiphyllum phyllanthoides (DC.) Sweet (1826), Cereus phyllanthoides (DC.) DC. (1828), Phyllocactus phyllanthoides (DC.) Link (1831), Nopalxochia phyllanthoides (DC.) Britton & Rose (1923), Heliocereus phyllanthoides (DC.) Doweld (2002) and Epiphyllum speciosum Haworth (1819).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
