history

In 1453, a covered transhipment point for grain was set up on the Ammer Canal ; this was the beginning of the building, which was extended by a transverse building in 1512. In 1564 one house and in 1607 the second house were added. The upper floor served as a place for socializing for parties, dance evenings and theater performances.

Theater performances were given either by students from Tübingen or by actors who had traveled there. Martin Crusius reported on two student performances: Susanna by Sixtus Birck and rhyming Doctor Faustus by an anonymous author whose work was published by Alexander Hock in Tübingen in 1588 and performed in the same year. In 1588 a troop led by Andreas Rhot from Sachsa in the county of Hohenstein also performed a "Tragedy of the Rich and Lazarus". In 1596 an English troupe came, who performed several love comedies a. a. Susanna performed. Duke Friedrich was even among the spectators .

From the 18th century, the building was partially used as a school building, which successively housed the German boys 'school, girls' school and secondary school . The rest of the building was still used by the Kornmarkt, which finally moved out in 1892. After a renovation, the fire brigade was housed on the ground floor. Later, after another renovation, the Red Cross moved into the ground floor .

Between 1985 and 1991 the building was prepared for its new use. During this time, extensive archaeological excavations and architectural studies were carried out, then it was rebuilt and renovated. The Rottenburg-born architect Johannes Manderscheid was responsible for the conversion (1986–1992) from the Kornhaus to the city museum . The renovation respects the historical existence of the house, no reconstructions were made. In 1991 it was opened as a city museum.
