Force density

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Force density denotes:

  • In mechanics, a differential description of the forces applied in a volume, which, when integrated over this volume, results in the effective force, see volume force
  • in electrostatics, the generally position-dependent forces that are exerted by an electrostatic field on differentially small volume elements of a continuous charge distribution, see Lorentz force
  • in technology, the force that can be transmitted tangentially to the frictional surface per unit area in a mechanical force transmission based on friction
