Crown of the Southern Cross

The Southern Cross ( Dąb Krzyż Południa in Polish , also Dąb Strażnik Topiła ) is a large oak in the Białowieża Primeval Forest in Poland . It is located in sector 106 in the north of the protected area.

The trunk circumference is 630 cm at a height of 130 cm. The oak reaches a height of 36 m. The trunk shows a considerable loss of bark at the base on the east side. However, the tree has increased 65 cm in girth since the mid-1960s. The name was derived from the shape of the crown, the main branches of which are reminiscent of a cross (see the image of the crown).
