Certificate in the foundation

A bottle containing a certificate is walled into the foundation . It says: “The foundation stone for this monument was laid on July 10, 1894. The memorial was erected by the Germania Walsdorf warrior association to commemorate the glorious campaign of 1870/71, the fallen to commemorate and the living to emulate. A landmark that still reminds the later generations of Walsdorf of the victories of their ancestors ...... The empire was won with a German sword, in peace hold it high and worth it, the enemy forehead, the comrade's hand, life, if it is must be, the fatherland. Done at Waldorf, July 10th, 1894. The board of the Germania Walsdorf Warrior Association, W. Capito, chairman. "

The then mayor Gustav Ochs added the following letter to the certificate: “Certificate hereby that the war memorial, for which the foundation stone is being laid today, is enough to adorn our old town. The foundation stone of the monument is laid on rocks and the foundation stone of the German fatherland lies firmly on the rocks. If the monument and the fatherland should one day be touched by enemies, the following words come true: With firm courage and a strong hand we protect the fatherland. Gustav Ochs, Mayor "

history

In a meeting on December 25, 1892, the Germania Walsdorf war club decided to erect a memorial. The stone carver Dötzel from Camberg was commissioned to present a design. The submitted draft was unanimously approved on January 21, 1894 and the foundation stone was laid on July 10, 1894. On July 31st, the memorial was picked up by horse-drawn carts in Camberg and put up at its present location. A celebration of the unveiling of the war memorial took place on August 5th and 6th, 1899. The memorial cost 728 marks , which the association had to raise. For this purpose, donations were collected and the income from the opening ceremony was used for financing. However, this was not enough. The association therefore applied for a subsidy from the municipality. The local council agreed on November 4, 1895, to contribute 100 marks from the local treasury. But even after that there was still a deficit of 60 marks. This was raised by each of the 25 members at a celebration on Shrove Tuesday in 1896 and through an additional contribution of 1.40 marks.
