Mühling prisoner of war camp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mühling POW camp (also: Mühling officer station ) was a POW camp of the Danube Monarchy during the First World War .

The camp, located in Mühling in the Wieselburg-Land community , covered around five hectares and was reserved for captured officers. A total of 300 officers could be accommodated here. Brick barracks with two or three-bed rooms were available as accommodation. One of the special features of this officers' camp was the camp money that was specially produced there (coins made of iron and paper money). The camp money ensured that the officers could not get any civilian clothes or food if they had to flee outside the camp, as they did not have the funds.

The young Egon Schiele also served as a soldier in the security team . In his spare time he painted the picture The Crumbling Mill in the Erlauftal .
