The Kaliningrad war cemetery - collective cemetery was inaugurated on 23 August 2003 in the former Königsberg civil cemetery "Cranzer Allee". 4,000 to 5,000 bomb victims and foreign prisoners of war from World War II rest here. Furthermore, after 2001 11,700 war dead from the city and the surrounding area were put into bed.

The cemetery is north out of town. It can be reached from the Amber Museum in the center on the right-hand side of Alexander-Newski-Straße.

War events

In the spring of 1945 Königsberg was surrounded by the Red Army . Wehrmacht soldiers, refugees and civilians were in the city.

The dead

Buried are fallen soldiers, prisoners of war from various nations, 4,000 to 5,000 civilians who died in the British air strikes and the assault on the city. From 2001, 2,900 fallen from the cathedral cemetery and 570 dead civilians from the city area were laid here. Over 14,000 dead rest here after being reburied.

It is the former Cranzer Allee cemetery in Königsberg. It was inaugurated on August 23, 2003 by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge and covers 85,000 square meters. Steles with the names of the known dead are erected around a high stone cross. Further steles list 3,000 names of Russian soldiers in agreement with the Association of Russian War Veterans in Kaliningrad.

reconciliation

Russian war veterans, representatives of the oblast and city administrations, as well as clergy of the Protestant, Catholic and Russian Orthodox Churches took part in the opening ceremony in 2003.
