Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis (from the Greek κρύος kryos = "cold, ice", λίπος lipos = "fat" and λύσις lysis = "solution, dissolution") is a cosmetic cold application that is supposed to reduce fatty tissue . It is a non-invasive technique that cools a fat area for about an hour. There are different methods: The skin is sucked in or cooled at certain points using plates. This leads to a cold-induced tissue inflammation, after which the thickness of the superficial fatty tissue layer can be reduced by 10-25%. The method is approved in the USA for the treatment of fat deposits.

history

Cryolipolysis goes back to the Boston dermatologists Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson. In animal experiments, fat cells were attacked more strongly by cold than the skin.

Mechanism of action

Cryolipolysis uses the greater susceptibility of fat cells to cold compared to the surrounding tissue. An applicator is attached to the desired area, brought to a temperature of −8 to −10 degrees using Peltier technology and cools the underlying fatty tissue to around +4 to +5 degrees. A fleece with gel between the skin and the applicator prevents frostbite. The fat cells go through what is known as apoptosis and are broken down by the body. This reduces the thickness of the fat layer. Sensors are connected to the control console and enable the cooling to be monitored and adjusted. In addition, the tissue is repeatedly massaged on the skin during the treatment using variable suction.

In order to achieve optimal treatment success, anti-inflammatory drugs such as B. Voltaren or ibuprofen should not be taken for about four weeks after treatment. If pain persists, paracetamol is a pain reliever with little anti-inflammatory potency that can be taken. According to the manufacturer, the reduction in fat deposits occurs after 8–16 weeks.

Side effects

After treatment, side effects may include bruising, reddening of the skin and numbness of the skin. These side effects do not last longer than a week in most cases. With written consent, freezing of the skin (level 2 with blisters) is also listed as side effects .

The paradoxical obese hypertrophy is a rare complication of cryolipolysis. In about 1% of the patients there is a voluminous increase in fat cells in the area of ​​the treated areas. This type of complication usually doesn't appear until several months later.

The costs for a cryolipolysis machine in Germany are between € 10,000 and € 25,000, depending on the manufacturer. For customers, the manufacturer's prices in the USA are $ 800 per treatment; the symmetrical reduction of fat deposits near the waist requires four treatments with a total cost of around $ 3,200.
