Kubu Island
Kubu Island is a geological elevation in the southwest of the Sowa Pan , which is part of the Makgadikgadi salt pans in northeast Botswana . Contrary to the name ( Iceland ), it is not an island .
The name Kubu is the Setswana term for hippopotamus .
The elevation is about one kilometer long and protrudes about 20 m from the pot-level Sowa Pan. Their rock is covered with guano .
fauna and Flora
Kubu Island is visited by jackals , hyenas , springboks , impalas and occasionally elephants . Their vegetation consists mainly of baobabs , African chestnuts , sterkulias and combretum .
Culture
Here are up to 1.25 m high stone walls, which were probably built in the 17th or 18th century for reasons that were previously unknown. It is also not known who built it.
The Botswana government has declared Kubu Island a national monument, but it is still open to tourists .
