The GREND cultural center is a socio-cultural , independent organization in the Essen-Steele district to the east of the city of Essen . Since 1996 the GREND has offered a cultural and artistic offer for different target groups as well as an educational offer for children and adults.

In 1996, the listed building of the former "Rector's School" (see also: List of Architectural Monuments in Steele (Essen) ) in the middle of Essen's Steele district after eight years of planning and renovation under the name GREND (= old German term for grindy, sandy soil) became socio-cultural Center opened. The operator of the center is the "Kulturzentrum Grend eV", a former amalgamation of three long-established cultural and educational associations in Essen: Werkstatt eV, Zimmertheater in Essen eV (Theater Freudenhaus) and Werkstatt-Bildungswerk eV After a reorganization, the most important activities have been since 2005 of the GREND has been converted into decentralized business areas of the sponsoring association with its own resource management.

Theater brothel

  • Regular stage program with own plays, third-party productions, guest performances by other independent theaters and a program for children. The focus of the program is currently on comedies that mainly deal with the structural change in the Ruhr area. We are currently working on diversifying the theater's program profiles and on new forms of cooperation.

Concert and event area

  • Regular rock and pop / independent music concerts as well as concerts for young up-and-coming bands. Since the 2000s also the Grend Slam, a poetry show in the Ruhr area.

  • has been offering a further education program with courses and workshops for adults since the 1990s.
