Kwale is an island in Tanzania , four kilometers from the mainland . The island is about four square kilometers and completely covered with coral stones, it has about 2,000 inhabitants (as of 1995).

Settlement remains on the island show that it was particularly densely populated in the 19th century. The remains of an Iron Age settlement have also been found on this island . The settlement dates from the third to the 15th century. It is one of the few sites on the east coast of Africa that can be dated so early and where ceramics and evidence of iron processing were found.
