Ring angle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ringing angle is the angle of the maximum deflection of a ringing bell in the steady state in relation to its vertical rest position.

Typical values for church bells are between 50 and 80 degrees. Usually large bells are rung with small, small bells with large ringing angles. The setting of the optimal ringing angle for a bell is called intonation .

The correct setting of the ringing angle is important for the sound of the bell as well as for the stability and safety of the bell system . In the case of a clapper that is well dimensioned in terms of vibration, the bell develops a good sound even at small ringing angles, poorly dimensioned clappers usually require higher ringing angles.
