Life and domination

Lê Trang Tông was born as the son of the emperor Lê Chiêu Tông . After Mac Dang Dung came to power and two emperors were murdered, a loyalist movement of Lê sympathizers led by the Nguyen noble house was formed in Laotian exile with the support of King Pho Thisarath I. In 1530 and 1531 there were uprisings by Lê loyalists in Vietnam. These were suppressed but many fled to Laos and strengthened the movement around Nguyen Kim there.

In 1533 Lê Trang Tông was proclaimed emperor at the age of eighteen. Under the aegis of Nguyen Kim, the Lê had military successes and as a result were able to move the court from exile to the hometown of the Thanh Hóa dynasty. After his death, the military leader Trịnh Kiểm took over the role of the strong man at the court .
