LAN manager
LAN Manager is an OS / 2 -based network operating system from Microsoft for local area networks .
Range of functions
The concept of domains was introduced for central administration. A LAN Manager Server can provide its LAN Manager Clients (LMC) with various resources (drives and directories, printers, serial devices) within the domain.
As a client - operating systems are DOS , OS / 2 and Macintosh support. There are also client and server implementations for Unix , for example, LAN Manager / X .

Development history
Originally as a further development of the programs MS-NET and Xenix NET together with the company 3Com developed MS OS / 2 LAN Manager has a variety since 1988 OEMs licensed. The best known are the IBM LAN Server , HP LAN Manager / X and Tapestry Torus. The version of 3com was sold as 3+ Open .
After 3com stopped marketing its server software in 1991, Microsoft now also offered MS LAN Manager 2.0 directly . The new features also included the TCP / IP transport protocol .
The last version 2.2 was released by Microsoft in early 1993 . The network components flowed into the development of the Windows NT server.
