An LED printer is a computer printer that works similarly to a laser printer . The LED technology uses a line of light emitting diodes as a light source in the print head.

Laser systems work with a complicated mirror arrangement that must not be misaligned during the life of the device. With this, the laser scans from one end of a line to the other and then repeats the process on the next line. It thus creates an image on the printing drum as the original passes through.

In contrast to this, the LED line of an LED printer is as wide as the original and thus exposes the entire width of the page at the same time. Due to their functional principle of exposing line by line, LED printers can print faster than laser printers that expose point by point. Because an LED print head has fewer or no moving parts compared to a laser print head, LED printers are also more reliable in operation and cheaper to manufacture than laser printers.

Oki claims to have produced the first LED printer in 1981. However, the principle may have been developed by Casio . At the same time, Casio presented an LCS printer that uses a liquid crystal matrix with a powerful lamp behind it instead of an LED matrix.
