The project is being developed by computer scientists at the Turin Polytechnic . The main focus is on the server component Feng . Although the project is still in the development stage, it is already more stable than other free streaming server solutions such as B. Icecast , but there is currently no graphical user interface (GUI). The support of the Ogg format via RTSP is unique . The project is no longer being developed and the former homepage is no longer accessible.

Server Feng

Feng (formerly Fenice ) runs directly on the console under Linux . On-demand and live streaming as well as the synchronization of audio, video and metadata are supported. In addition to unicast , Feng also allows multicasts to any number of recipients. The latency time for the streaming itself is a few seconds, depending on the network conditions, data packet size and other factors. In the case of live streaming transmissions, the MTU size of the routers and the computing time for encoding the uncompressed audio and video output material must be taken into account. For example, B. the conversion of audio material into compressed MP3, depending on the computer performance, more or less time.

Feng supports the following formats:

Feng's streams can be received by the VLC media player . Feng streams can also be played from MPlayer , RealPlayer and Winamp . Nemesi was developed as special player software.

Player framework Libnemesi

The framework Libnemesi is used for embedding in playback programs , which can be used on a Unix shell as a player for the streams sent by Feng without a graphical environment.
