La-Pa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La-pa , also la-ba , is a straight natural trumpet about 1.5 meters long that is played in Chinese music . It consists of two thin, almost cylindrical metal tubes that can be pushed into one another like a trombone . The la-pa has a flat, wide-rimmed mouthpiece and a wide-spreading bell. Sometimes the bell is turned backwards in a 180-degree arc. Only the 2nd to 5th partial tones are played.

Originally the la-pa was a popular instrument for moving. Today the la-pa is only found in the military, at weddings and with scissors grinders, who use it as a luring instrument.
