La Granja (Mallorca)
Coordinates: 39 ° 40 ′ 7.6 ″ N , 2 ° 33 ′ 32.5 ″ E
The approximately 3000 m² La Granja estate is located in the western part of Mallorca near the town of Esporles .
It owes its creation to a hamlet called Alpich . This hamlet and the associated rock spring made it possible for mills to operate and thus for small farms to be established.
Count Nuno Sans settled here in 1229. In 1239 the count donated the town of La Granja to the Cistercian order , who built the island's first Cistercian monastery here. The order managed the estate for over 200 years before moving to Palma .
Today La Granja is privately owned. The manor has been expanded into an open-air museum and offers an insight into the earlier religious life, but also into the lifestyle of the lords of the 19th and early 20th centuries. A collection of torture instruments in the dungeon is remarkable. Twice a week on Wednesday and Friday, old crafts and folk dances are demonstrated for tourists.
Even today, wines and sherry are still produced on the estate . A tasting can take place at any time during the tour of the estate.
