The Lacus Spei ( Latin : Lake of Hope ) is a solidified lava lake on the earth's moon , which is similar to the larger Maria in terms of its origin . It is at 43 ° N / 65 ° E and has a mean diameter of 80 km. On the occasion of its discovery in 1976, the International Astronomical Union approved its name at its General Assembly in Grenoble .
