Camps for Recreation and Work (LEA, also Camp for Work and Recreation or Camp for Recreation and Work ) were organized in many places in the GDR for schoolchildren from the age of 14 for two weeks during the summer holidays.

Details

Participation was voluntary, the work was paid for, and the respective companies in which the students came to work were responsible for supply and accommodation. Existing apprentice dormitories or children's holiday camps were sometimes used as accommodation. Work took place between four and six hours a day, mostly in the morning, then there was free time and cultural events were offered. Most of the work was done in agriculture, such as harvesting potatoes, beets or strawberries. The young people were also used in forestry, gardening and landscaping, digging trenches, in industrial operations (e.g. in the textile industry) and keeping parks, squares and streets clean. There were also missions abroad, for example in Poland. During school days there were also harvest assignments that took place in the afternoons after school lessons.
