Harvest use

Harvest use was the term used in the GDR for the relief operations of soldiers, schoolchildren, apprentices and students (but outside of the FDJ student summer ) in agriculture , mainly when harvesting z. B. potatoes, strawberries, beets and apples. The work was paid according to the quantity and quality of the crop. Participation was compulsory, non-participation was only possible for health reasons after submitting a certificate. In particular, the one-week harvest assignments by students in the first year of study, who were housed near the harvesting area for the duration of the assignment, were viewed by universities as a collective education measure.

Even today the use of mostly Polish workers z. B. in the asparagus harvest sometimes referred to as harvest use. It is common for these seasonal workers to be called harvest workers . Since 2006, a statutory minimum of 10% of workers from Germany was prescribed, plus there are encouraging especially the Federal Employment Agency for seasonal employment by the unemployed .
