Loaf (unit)

Loaf is an old unit of weight for cheese in the Swiss canton of Appenzell . It is derived from the name loaf for the cheese shape.

When weighing, cheese is differentiated according to its fat content. There are two sizes:

  • 1 loaf of fat = 50 heavy pounds = 608.2 Dutch ace and
  • 1 loaf of lean = 32 heavy pounds = 389,248 Dutch ace = 40 Prussian pounds.
