Okanagan Lake is a long, narrow inland lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The approximately 135 km long and 4–5 km wide lake with a surface of 351 km² meanders through the Okanagan Basin in the southern part of British Columbia and merges into the river of the same name about 55 km from the border with Washington State .
The largest town on the shores of the lake is Kelowna with 117,312 inhabitants , which developed at the beginning of the 20th century when numerous Europeans settled the valley. The residents along the lake, including many Canadians of German descent, live in particular from tourism , as well as from agriculture and forestry . In Kelowna in particular, a profitable service industry developed . The area is particularly known within Canada for the cultivation of fruit and wine.
According to legend, the sea monster Ogopogo lives in Lake Okanagan .
