Laki Niu

Laki Niu is a Tongan lawyer who has been a judge at the Tongan Supreme Court since 2018.

Career

Niu studied law at the Auckland Law School in New Zealand and then returned to Tonga. There he was a member of parliament and president of the Tonga Legal Association. In 2016, he served as a defense attorney in a trial against two Chinese citizens who illegally obtained Tongan passports. The scandal surrounding the sale of passports attracted a lot of attention in Tonga. On June 21, 2018, Niu was born to King Tupou VI. appointed Supreme Court Judge. He started his four-year term on June 2. The nomination of Nius is part of an initiative through which Tonga's judiciary is to be increasingly filled with Tongan lawyers. Today New Zealand or Australian lawyers often hold leading positions in Tonga's judiciary.
