The LFR originated in 1970 and was adapted several times in the 1980s. A new, revised version of the LFR has existed since 2007.

The main content features include the establishment number, address and name of the unit, as well as information on land and / or animal populations from surveys and administrative data sources. It is primarily used for the complete recording of all agricultural and forestry units in Austria as well as the correct selection and addressing of the survey mass in full surveys and samples.

In addition, the LFR is the basis for the agricultural and forestry business information system ( LFBIS ), since the agricultural and forestry business numbers and their managers are managed and maintained in the LFR.
