Isoparce is a genus of butterflies from the family of swarmers (Sphingidae). For a long time the genus was regarded as monotypical , but in 2001 a second, newly described species was added to the genus. After comparing the genital structure, Ceratomia is likelythe closest related species.
features
From isoparce broui only one copy has so far been caught. Isoparce cupressi has strongly patterned forewings and monochrome brownish hind wings and is therefore easy to distinguish from species of other genera.
Occurrence and way of life
So far nothing is known about the occurrence, the way of life and the pre-imaginal stages of Isoparce broui .
Isoparce cupressi has been recorded from the coastal lowlands of North and South Carolina , Georgia and Florida , as well as west along the Gulf coast to central Texas. Other occurrences further north have been demonstrated along the banks of the Mississippi and other adjacent rivers. However, it can be assumed that the distribution of the species has not yet been fully recorded due to the inaccessibility of the marshy habitats. The caterpillars of I. cupressi feed on Taxodium distichum .
Systematics
Two species of the genus are known worldwide:
- Isoparce cupressi (Boisduval, [1875])
- Isoparce broui Eitschberger, 2001
