The State Investigation Office for Chemistry, Hygiene and Veterinary Medicine (LUA), as a specialist authority in the state of Bremen , performs consumer protection tasks. The state authority is a state service provider in consumer protection and health protection for humans and animals. It is located at the Senator for Health in Bremen.

Laboratory tests and assessments are carried out in food monitoring, animal disease control, and monitoring studies for the import and export of food and feed via the free ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven (EU border control posts). Examination of ground and surface water, drinking water and discharge water is part of the range of tasks. The LUA Bremen offers the training of biology laboratory assistants.

The State Investigation Office was established as a merger of the Hygiene Institute, the State Veterinary Investigation Office and the Staatl. Chemical research institute founded and is part of the NoKo (= North German cooperation with Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Berlin and Brandenburg). Here the LUA Bremen serves the competence center for coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate and fish (microbiology).
