The Landmann La 16 is the first and only self-launching motor glider built in the GDR . It was developed at the Institute for Aircraft Design at the Technical University of Dresden by a study project group under the direction of Hermann Landmann . There were two prototypes with the designations Lerche and Heidelerche .

development

Construction work on the V1 Lerche began in 1954, and construction took place in the institute's own workshop. The aircraft was made entirely of wood and had a fuselage that was strongly tapered behind the cabin towards the braced V-tail. The wings were trapezoidal. The engine used was a two-cylinder Kroeber M4 engine from the 1930s with 18 HP (13 kW), which enabled the sailor to launch himself. The first flight took place in December 1955. During testing it was lost in July of the following year due to a broken tail, and test pilot Karl Treuter was able to jump off with a parachute.

This was followed in 1958/59 by the second prototype V2 woodlark , with a slightly enlarged rear fuselage cross-section and non-braced V-tail that can be adjusted on the ground by 8 ° in three stages. The engine could be dismantled in 20 minutes and the V2 converted into a glider. The wing was given a 535 profile , the tail unit a NACA 0012. After several flights in the aircraft tow with the drive switched off and on, the first independent start with an engine took place on October 13, 1961. The test was successfully completed and the woodlark flew another one For a while at the TH Dresden until she was handed over to the Schönhagen Aviation School . The last flight there took place on June 28, 1973 (according to other sources 1975/1976), after which it was deleted from the register.
