Long Emil (Mechernich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lange Emil was a 134.6 meter high chimney of the Magdalenenhütte in Mechernich , which was built in 1884/1885 and at the time of completion was the highest chimney in the world. He got his name from Emil Kreuser, a major shareholder and tall man. The chimney was shortened to 127 meters in height during World War I and was inoperable from 1910 to 1926.

On March 14, 1951, its tip was damaged in an earthquake . It remained in operation until the Magdalenenhütte was closed on December 31, 1957. The chimney was blown up on October 28, 1961 after an attempt the day before failed. Its stump still exists today.
