Lapins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lapins is a red variety of sweet cherries belonging to the cartilage cherries . It is self-fertile , which is based on mutation breeding in the emergence of its parent variety 'Stella'. The yields are high and regular.

origin

The 'Lapins' variety originated in Summerland , Canada . There it was bred in the “Pacific Agri-Food Research Center” at the beginning of the 1970s by crossing the self-fertile varieties 'Stella' and 'Van' , which in turn were self-fertile through fertilization with pollen irradiated by X-rays , and it was brought onto the market in the early 1980s.

Variety characteristics

tree

The tree has a medium-strong, compact habit with upright leading branches. 'Lapins' flowers early, but for a relatively short time. The flowers are only slightly sensitive to frost, the variety is suitable as a pollen donor. The cherries grow in dense clusters in the upper area of biennial branches, which makes harvesting and pest control difficult.

fruit

The stone fruit is large to very large and broadly rounded. The firm skin is wine red. The firm, moderately juicy flesh is red and tastes sweet, but only slightly aromatic. The fruits burst easily when wet, so the variety is not recommended for regions with high rainfall in summer. It ripens in the 6th cherry week .
