Lateral pressure point

Lateral pressure point and sail pressure point in the side elevation of a sailing dinghy

The lateral pressure point of a sailing boat is a geometrically determinable point which, among other things, provides information about the trim behavior of sailing vehicles. The lateral pressure point is the center of gravity of the lateral plan .

The lever arm between the lateral point and the pressure point of the sail causes the windward and leewardness of a boat. The relative position of the two points thus affects the direction in which the boat sails relative to the wind. This is used, for example, in windsurfing, where steering is not carried out with a rudder, but only by shifting the sail and thus the sail pressure point relative to the lateral pressure point.
