The cigar brand Partagás Habana is one of the oldest and most famous cigar brands from Cuba and is produced by Cubatabaco . A non-Cuban version with the label “Partágas 1845” is made in the Dominican Republic by General Cigar , a US tobacco company, from Dominican, Jamaican, Mexican and Cameroonian tobacco.

history

The “Partagás” cigar factory behind the Capitol

The brand is named after Don Jaime Partagás Ravelo, who founded the Real Fábricas de Tabaco Partagás (Royal Partagas tobacco factories) in Havana in 1845 . The factory is the only cigar factory that has continued production without interruption since then. The name of the factory was probably chosen because it supplied several European and Asian royal families. The cigar already received an award at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867 .

Jaime Partagás owned several plantations in the Cuban tobacco growing area Vuelta Abajo . This enabled him to access extensive tobacco stocks. He also experimented with various fermentation and maturation processes. According to legend, he was the first to employ readers who kept the cigar rollers entertaining during their monotonous work.

Partágas was murdered in 1868 (according to other sources in 1864), after which the company was continued by his son José Partagás. In 1877 the company was sold to the entrepreneur José A. Bance, who converted Partagás into a joint stock company in 1888, but kept shares in it. In 1900 the shares were taken over by the company Cifuentes, Fernández y Cía with the partners Ramón Cifuentes and Baldomero Fernández.

Fernández seems to have left the company in 1916, after which Cifuentes founded the new company Cifuentes, Pego y Cía with Francisco Pego-y-Pita. In 1927 the Ramón Allones brand was acquired. A new brand named after Cifuentes also appeared in these years.

Cifuentes finally died in 1938, and Pego sold his shares to the Cifuentes family under the leadership of Cifuentes son Ramon Jr. The company was then renamed Cifuentes y Cía. The brands Bolívar and La Gloria Cubana were acquired by José F. Rocha in 1954 and then manufactured in their own factory.

After the nationalizations that followed the Cuban Revolution in 1961, the head of the family Ramón Cifuentes was offered the leadership of the national tobacco industry. Cifuentes refused and the family fled the country, whereupon the newly founded Cubatabaco continued the factory (renamed 'Francisco Pérez Germán') and production. After a break of almost 17 years, Ramón Cifuentes began manufacturing Partágas and Bolívars for the US market in Jamaica and later the Dominican Republic for General Cigar in 1977. Ramón Cifuentes died in 2000.

In 2002, a few years after the Spanish-French tobacco company Altadis bought a 50% stake in Habanos SA , profound changes were made in Cuban cigar production. So it was decided that the individual brands should either only have manually or only machine-made cigars in their range. In addition, many cigars that had low sales were discontinued. By then, Partagas had produced a large number of hand-rolled and machine-rolled cigars, which is why the brand's portfolio was severely curtailed.

The cigars from Partagás are long filler premium cigars with a strong aroma and were available in around 40 different formats. The factory building in Havana at number 520 Calle Industria is now a popular tourist destination.
