Laterognathy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A laterognathia (lat. Latus "side" and Greek. Gnathos "jaw") refers to a malocclusion ( malocclusion ), characterized by a deviation of the lower jaw toward a side. A different growth of the lower jaw halves is a possible cause. The most common cause of a lateral deviation of the lower jaw is a too narrow upper jaw. Laterognathy results in uneven loading of the muscles of the entire musculoskeletal system beyond the head area.

Depending on which jaw deviates horizontally from the center line, a distinction is made:

  • mandibular laterognathy - lateral deviation of the lower jaw
  • maxillary laterognathy - lateral deviation of the upper jaw
