Latviešu zemnieku savienība

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Latviešu Zemnieku savienība ( German  Latvian Farmers' Union ) was one of the largest political parties in Latvia from 1917 to 1934.

history

The Latvian Farmers' Union was founded in May 1917 by Kārlis Ulmanis , among others . In August 1917 it already had 20,000 members.

The Latvian Peasant Association demanded the expropriation of the noble landowners and the division of their lands among the landless. Since the Latvian Farmers' Union developed into one of the main parties of the Republic of Latvia , this concern could be realized from 1919/1920.

The Latvian Farmers' Union was a conservative people's party. Among the leading politicians of the party were Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics , Ādolfs Klīve , Hugo Celmiņš , Arturs Alberings and Jānis Balodis .

After his coup on May 15, 1934 , Ulmanis had the Latvian Farmers' Union dissolved.

Successor parties

The Latvijas Zemnieku Savienība party (LZS, Latvian Farmers 'Union), founded in 2002, regards itself as the successor to the Latvian Farmers' Union. A splinter group of the LZS also ran for elections from 1993 under the original name.
