Arturs Alberings

Arturs Alberings (born December 26, 1876 July / January 7,  1877 greg. In Rūjiena ; † April 26, 1934 ) was a Latvian politician and Prime Minister of the Latvian Farmers' Union ( Latvijas Zemnieku Savienība ).

Life

Studies, professional career and member of parliament

After attending school, Alberings studied agricultural science , which he graduated with a licentiate in 1906 . He was then director of an agricultural school in Russia for a few years before becoming director of the Central Agricultural Office in Riga in 1910 . He later became one of the founders of the Fraternitas Rusticana student association at the University of Latvia .

Alberings began his political career in 1918 as a member of the Latvian People's Council , which declared Latvia's independence on November 18, 1918 . There he represented the interests of the Latvian Farmers' Union ( Latvijas Zemnieku Savienība ). Subsequently, he was first elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly in April 1920 and for the first time in October 1922 in the Parliament ( Saeima ), of which he was a member until October 1931.

Prime Minister from 1926 and Minister

On May 7, 1926, he succeeded Kārlis Ulmanis as Prime Minister , although he had no previous government experience. In his cabinet, which was in office until December 18, 1926, he also took over the office of finance minister on September 10, 1926 . After a little over seven months' reign, he was replaced by Marģers Skujenieks , the first social democratic prime minister in Latvia.

On December 1, 1928 he was appointed Minister of Agriculture by Hugo Celmiņš and remained in this office until March 5, 1930. The office of Minister of Agriculture, he then took over again from March 27 to December 5, 1931 in Ulmani's sixth cabinet.

He then largely withdrew from politics.
