Launceston Castle ( Cornish Fort Lannstefan ) in Launceston in England was a Norman fortress of the Earls of Cornwall and is now in ruins. The castle ruins are now under the administration of English Heritage . An entrance fee is charged for viewing.

The city's dungeon was also located in the castle.

During the Second World War , a hospital was housed within the walls of the castle.

The southern gatehouse

In the Middle Ages this gate led out into the count's private deer enclosure. After going out through the gate, the path continued over a fortified bridge over a moat. The gatehouse had heavy doors and a portcullis . Above the gate there was a comfortable apartment in the gatehouse.
