Le Chant du Départ ( German : "The song of departure") is a revolutionary and war song that was written in 1794 by Étienne-Nicolas Méhul and Marie-Joseph Chénier . Robespierre changed his original title "Hymne de la liberté" to the current title.
The song was the national anthem of France from 1804 to 1815 . Under the rule of Napoléon Bonaparte, it replaced the Marseillaise , which only became an anthem again after the July Revolution of 1830 .
As president, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing used to have the Chant du Départ played regularly with the Marseillaise on official occasions.
The peculiarity of the song is that different groups (warriors, old people, mothers ...) are supposed to perform it. Only the refrain is the same for all groups.
