Le Grand Troupeau
The large herd (French: Le Grand Troupeau ) is a French novel by Jean Giono from 1931. In this "anti-war book", Giono processes his experiences from the First World War . Between opulent descriptions of a steadily growing herd that pours into the valleys behind the shepherd like a river that has stepped out of bed, apocalyptic scenes from the war appear at ever shorter intervals - in the end only the deserted mountain ranges remain.
