history
Michail Fokine's choreography is based on a choreographic poem by Théophile Gautier . For the music, Fokine chose Carl Maria von Weber's Invitation to Dance Op. 65 (J 260) , while Léon Bakst designed the set and costumes . The premiere of the play took place on April 19, 1911 in the theater of Monte Carlo . Tamara Karsawina and Vaslav Nijinsky danced the leading roles at the premiere . The grace and elegance of Nijinsky's leap through the window has been highlighted by many critics and is not considered to have been matched by any other interpreter of the role.
