history

Lebara was founded in 2001 by Ratheesan Yoganathan, Rasiah Ranjith Leon and Baskaran Kandiah. The word "Lebara" was created from parts of the first names of the three founders. Initially, the company sold phone cards that were distributed through independent phone shops. In 2004 the company entered the mobile phone business: Lebara sold the first prepaid SIM cards in the Netherlands, using the Telfort network - a subsidiary of KPN. As a result, Lebara achieved great success and quickly expanded into other European countries, including a. Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Lebara started selling in Germany in 2010 and uses the Deutsche Telekom mobile network. In Switzerland, the brand has been made available to the Sunrise telecom group as a franchise model since 2013 .

In mid-September 2017, the Lebara Group BV and the Lebara brand company were taken over by the Swiss family company and investor "Palmarium". The new CEO has since been Graeme Oxby. Lebara's founding team left the company in this context.
