Body gendarmerie

The body gendarmerie was a mostly mounted bodyguard , which was intended for orderly and guard duty with a monarch . ' Gendarmerie ' (French gens d'armes ) is literally meant here as 'the armed men'.

In most states it consisted of well-trained men and officers .
