Suffering

Psychological stress describes the subjective experience of suffering that has a significantly negative influence on one's own quality of life and well-being. A sufficiently high level of suffering is an important driving force for change and can cause the person concerned to seek help or to accept the help offered.

Higher quality of life

Some doctrines hold that higher levels of suffering do not necessarily lead to positive changes. Rather, the person affected must first be able to find a way out of the crisis through supportive measures and put them into a state of empowerment and better quality of life, so that they can then develop their own activities to improve their condition from this strengthened position.

The term psychological stress is not a synonym for the sensation of pain , since the expectation of impending disadvantages often plays a greater role in the extent of the suffering than the acute suffering. However, the subjectively expressed level of suffering can be equated with the complaints or complaints presented to a doctor, from which the term etiology is derived. In this sense of the lawsuit or indictment, the desire for betterment can also be understood in both a medical and a legal sense.

Examples

An example of this is alcoholism , in which those affected often only feel pressure of suffering (“personal low point”) after losing their job or relationship or serious damage to their health, which prompts them to seek help and decide on the path to recovery. (Alcoholism is an incurable disease from which those affected can recover through progressive abstinence from alcohol ("dryness"), but can never be completely cured.)
In management consulting theories, the concept of psychological distress plays an important role as a tactical element of leadership, especially in the area of behavior modification . It is assumed here that rational insight does not trigger any action consequences for people in practice. The Western enlightenment project had ultimately failed in this sense, as the futile political approaches of the student movement had recently shown; Appeals to reason allegedly died out without consequences. Instead, modern leadership can only be achieved through a combination of the targeted generation of suffering and the simultaneous awakening of expectations of hope ( carrot and stick principle ) in order, from the point of view of management , to remove resistance to change.
