Leishmaniasis of the guinea pigs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leishmaniasis of the guinea pigs is a by Leishmania enriettii caused parasitosis in guinea pigs . It was first described in a collection in Brazil in 1948 . The vector is unknown. The disease occurs only in South America . Curiously, the wild guinea pigs native to Brazil are not susceptible even though the disease is endemic there .

The disease manifests itself as ulcerative changes in the skin, especially on the feet, nose, ears, and genitals. It is thought to spread through the blood. With experimental injection into the skin, the pathogen can also be detected in the regional lymph nodes and in the bone marrow , but not in the spleen . The diagnosis is made by microscopic examination using Giemsa-stained skin scraps .
