Schwerin district championships in performance herding 1986

Herding (hats Competitions / Trials) belongs as the guard dog to use tests for the working dog, the working dog . In performance herding, the interaction between the shepherd and the dog (s) is assessed, as is the driving and keeping of the herd.

The performance herding of the Association for German Shepherds is briefly outlined here as an example .

In performance herding, shepherds and dogs have to perform tasks that are assessed:

  1. Pen out . A strange herd of at least 200 animals is driven out of a pen (fenced area) by the shepherd with 2 dogs. After the herd has left the pen, the dogs keep the herd together.
  2. Bridge . The herd must be driven across a bridge, or simulated bridge. The dogs prevent sheep from walking past the bridge.
  3. Obstacles, traffic : the task is to drive the herd along a wide road. The dogs should ensure that they are not endangered by traffic by moving between the herd and vehicles.
  4. Conduct in the wide guard . A wide guard can be a large area that is not fenced, the sheep should only use part of it. The dogs patrol around the herd and keep them together in the permitted area.
  5. Behavior in close guard . The space here is very limited, so the sheep stand and eat in a very confined space. Since the confinement causes the sheep to have a tendency to leave the room, the dogs have a lot to do.
  6. Narrow path : A long and narrow driving path. The dogs must keep the herd on the way and prevent them from doing damage to the sides by eating.
  7. Pinning : the herd is driven into a pen by means of the dogs.

All of these points are assessed individually and with different scores. During the whole time, obedience, diligence and independence are also assessed, the judges pay attention to how the individual dog fulfills its tasks and how it treats sheep that have left the herd, for example.

There are other herding competitions that meet different requirements, with fewer animals to be herded or with only one dog.
