Leksvik was a Norwegian municipality in North Trøndelag . 3475 inhabitants lived in an area of 430 km² (as of June 30, 2017). The last mayor was Einar Strøm ( Senterpartiet ). Since January 1st 2018 it belongs to the municipality of Indre Fosen .

The community was in a very mountainous area. The mountains rose to a height of 600 m.

In the municipality there were two larger closed settlements: Leksvik with 1073 and Vanvikan with 736 inhabitants. There were also the smaller settlements of Hindrem, where King Sverre fought his last great naval battle in 1199 , and Seter with 150 inhabitants. In Leksvik there were also some ruins that belong to a fortification from the Roman or Migration Period, called "Borgen" or "Borgåsen". They are between Seter and the Leksvik settlement.

A stave church is mentioned in 1589, but it soon fell into disrepair and was destroyed when lightning struck. In 1653 a church was built in Hindrum, but it was demolished in 1895 when the place was added to the parish of Vanvirkan.

A folk tale reports that a troll used to live on Borgen . He was so annoyed by the bell of the church in Hindrum that he threw a large stone at her. But he missed and the stone is shown in the Hindrem area. There is a similar legend about the church in Leksvik. There it was a troll on Våttåhaugen (now a lookout point near Leksvik). The Våttå troll threw the stone towards Leksvik Church, did not hit her, and the stone can now be viewed on the beach.

Leksvik has a church from 1667 and the ruins of a German naval base from WWII.

Originally the place was called "Ljoksa", and this is how it appears in the sagas. The meaning is unknown and the name is ancient. In 1894 the place was named "Lexviken". The name Leksvik was established in 1917.
