Leonor Moctezuma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leonor , according to other sources: Mariana (her Indian name is not known) was a daughter of the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II. She was younger than Tecuichpoch , had another mother, of whom only the place of origin Acatlan is known, and was apparently in her rank subordinate. Her life dates are only known in fragments. She is not to be confused with Leonor Cortés y Moctezuma, the illegitimate daughter of Hernán Cortés with Tecuichpoch.

Genealogy of Leonor

Leonor was initially married to the Spaniard Juan Paez (or Paz) and, like her sister Tecuichpoch, received the Encomienda Ecatepec for their wedding in 1527 . Paez died in 1529. After two years she married the Conquistador Cristóbal de Valderrama. The marriage produced a daughter, also named Leonor. After the death of her second husband in 1537, Leonor remained the owner of the Encomienda Ecatepec.

Tecuichpoch had unsuccessfully asked the Spanish king in 1532 to assign further possessions to her sister just like herself. The reason was that from 1531 the main town of Tizayuca was detached from the Encomienda Ecatepec and passed into the possession of the king. In 1553 Leonor reached a verdict that awarded her the Acalhuacan tribute, but this could not be finally settled until 1610.

The Encomienda Ecatepec remained in the Leonors family, although the brother of their daughter Leonor's husband, Diego Arias Sotelo, was executed for involvement in the alleged attempt at overthrowing Martín Cortés in 1568 and Diego Arias himself was exiled. After inheritance disputes among the more distant descendants, the encomienda was sold to other hands in 1618.
