Patras lighthouse

The Lighthouse of Patras is a city landmark.

history

The first lighthouse made of wood was in Patras at the Hagios-Nikolaos-Pier since 1858. However, this structure fell victim to a storm in 1865. In 1878 it was replaced by a stone lighthouse without a platform, which was demolished in 1972 during the tenure of Mayor Golphinopoulos. In 1999 the approximately 13 meter high cylindrical tower with lantern and gallery was rebuilt from the original stones as a landmark and tourist attraction west of the port. In the immediate vicinity there are parks and playgrounds, a green area with a promenade and various refreshment stops and the neo-Byzantine church of Agios Andreas . The lighthouse is no longer in operation, but can be illuminated.
