Lexical tone

Lexical tone is a term of prosody and describes the use of the height or the course of the fundamental frequency of a syllable as a distinctive feature of the morphemes. A distinction is made between a register tone with constant height and a contour tone that changes height during its duration. Contour tones are a distinctive characteristic of tonal languages , the Chinese languages are a well-known example .
